‘I can’t do yoga because I’m not flexible”. I hear this almost every day when I tell people I’m a yoga and Pilate’s teacher. But here’s the deal, you don’t have to be flexible to do yoga because it is a practice for you to focus on your own body and to develop flexibility over time, whether that is in Yoga or Pilates or both. Yoga for beginners is an accessible class/practice that is idea for those wanting to make a start on a journey to a mentally and physically stronger being.
So, let’s make a deal to not use this phrase anymore. Deal? Comment with the thumbs up emoji to let me know you’re in!
Life Is Messy. It’s Not A Perfect Social Media Reel!
Life is messy. Often on social media, we see the highlights of people’s lives, but I want to share a little messy with you today. This is the real me. There are some days that I get up and can barely move. I have Fibromyalgia, so every day I dip my toe in the water when I wake up, to see what sort of a day is about to present itself. When I do my morning practice, there are many occasions where a forward fold doesn’t even like me. Yet I am a teacher!
The butterfly pose is my favourite hip opening pose, but it didn’t come easy to me in the beginning. The hips are where we hold all of our emotions as women and trust me, I had plenty of emotion hiding in there.
It’s all about what my body needs on that day, at that moment. But when I can land a pose that I’ve been working towards, I love it because I get such a sense of achievement. There are so many photos of people wrapping their legs around their necks and demonstrating all of these wonderful, advanced poses, but in reality, it doesn’t always look like that. It takes time, compassion for our body, and acceptance that we may not be built to do those poses.
How about you? What pose did you have to work hard for, but you savour those moments when you land it now?
My first yoga class was a mixed-ability Hatha class. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I signed up. Fast forward 7 years later and I can’t imagine my life without meditation in particular but everything that I do, I practice. It’s amazing what time can do but you must get started.
